Weekly Update 3/26/21

Friday, March 26, 2021

Dear RSU 71 Students, Families, Staff, School Board and Community Members,

Happy Friday, Everybody!

Next week is a sacred week in the Judeo-Christian tradition. Passover -- an eight-day festival -- commemorates Israelites' emancipation from slavery and begins tomorrow. In Christianity, next week is Holy Week, which begins on Palm Sunday (March 28) and ends on Easter Sunday, April 4. Warm wishes for meaningful import in the week ahead to everyone in our RSU 71 community and the observant of all faith traditions.

Staff will receive this update at noon today, and families will receive it via Robo-email this afternoon.

Pandemic Update - This week, we have had an additional confirmed case of the coronavirus in an individual associated with Belfast Area High School. We are still in Green/In-Person mode in our five K-8 schools and the Yellow/Hybrid mode at BAHS and BCOPE. More and more staff are getting vaccinated and mostly finding the experience of the first of two shots a positive one. Many more young people are now contracting COVID-19, so vigilance around safety protocols continues to be very important. In Maine, all counties continue to be Green, though the case rate is higher than two weeks ago.  The six requirements for returning to in-person continue unabated in all Maine counties. As always, please feel free to be in touch with me, our nurses, and our administrators.

Allergies - Please read this helpful information from our school nurses about students who have allergies at this time of year. The symptoms of COVID-19 are often very similar to those experienced by people with allergies. If you have children in this situation, please fill out the form and return it to the nurses.  Thank you!

Maine Department of Education - This week, the DOE received documents from the US Department of Education that provide a summary of the American Rescue Plan (ARP Act), which authorizes a total of $411,303, 282.00 for Maine with a minimum of 90% ($370, 172, 954.00) directed to education.

Good News - Here are some good-news pieces -- articles, a video, and photos -- from the past week:

Friday Update 3/19/21

Weekly Update - Friday, March 19, 2021

Dear RSU 71 Students, Families, Staff, School Board and Community Members,

Pandemic Update - We are still in Green Mode K-8 and Yellow/Hybrid Mode 9-12. There has been a notable uptick in the number of positive cases of COVID-19 in the state and among young people -- even babies! So now is not the time to relax safety protocols, begin to wear our masks below our noses, or think that it is safe to be physically close to individuals outside of our families. Students and staff in the 7th-grade returned to in-person instruction today, while students and staff at the East Belfast School will return to school on Monday, March 22. We have had one additional person, an individual associated with Troy Howard Middle School, test positive for the coronavirus. Because the person has not been in school for some time, there was no need to do contract tracing or have anyone move to quarantine.

Vaccinations - My husband and I received our COVID-19 shots this past week, and the experience was terrific --  well-organized, speedy, thoughtful, and painless. Many staff members have already received their first shots, and some have had their second already.  As Dr. Nirav Shah, MD, the Maine CDC director, advises: getting vaccinated to prevent COVID-19 helps protect yourself, your loved ones, and your community.

Lots of Good News - I hope you all enjoyed St. Patrick's Day on Wednesday. Spring officially begins tomorrow! This week there is a lot of good news in RSU 71 and the state of Maine.

Troy Howard Seed Company - There has been a lot of media coverage of the Seed Project at THMS: an article in the Bangor Daily News: a television spot on ABC 7 /Fox 22; and the website of the Bangor Police Department!  Congratulation to 7th-grade students, featured students Katience Parenteau and Greta Graf, and teacher Mr. David Wessels!

Art Students on Exhibition at the Portland Museum of Art - The selected artworks of students Rose White (Kermit Nickerson), Lucy Engstrom  (CASS), Ruby Day, and Euan Newell (Belfast Area High School) were chosen for exhibition at the museum in recognition of the National Youth Art Month. Congratulations to our students and their talented teachers: Nancy Brown, Linda Nichols, and Kathie Gass!

Maine Success vis-a-vis the Pandemic - The state of Maine is doing relatively well by its citizens during this challenging period in our shared history.

That's it for this week. I will email this update to staff and the school board this morning, and we'll Robo-email it to families and the press in the afternoon and post it on the district website. As always, please feel free to call or email our nurses, administrators, and me.

Weekly Update 3/12/21

Friday, March 12, 2021

Dear RSU 71 Students, Families, Staff, School Board, and Community Members,

I hope that you've had a good week. It sure has been good to see the sun and enjoy warmer days!

Good News

I want to start this week with a couple of happy videos about students in RSU 71, the first a story that was done by WABI and aired on the nightly news about a first-grader at Gladys Weymouth Elementary School.

https://www.wabi.tv/video/2021/03/11/year-old-belfast-boy-honored-making-life-saving-call/

The second video is of the  RSU 71 Students Shine Show featuring Mrs. Nancy Brown's second-grade art students at the Captain Albert Stevens School. The next show will feature Belfast Area High School's Mr. David Thomas and his science students.   https://youtu.be/5cCOYu-S_uo

 COVID-19 Update

According to today's update from the state, we are still in GREEN -- the whole state of Maine is. On Wednesday, we had two positive cases of the coronavirus confirmed in individuals associated with East Belfast Elementary and one at Troy Howard Middle School. East Belfast Elementary moved to the Red/Remote Learning Mode, with staff and students working together from home (some teachers will be teaching from their classrooms) through March 19, returning to in-person instruction on March 22. The seventh grade has also needed to move to the Red/Remote Mode, with staff and students returning on March 19th.  I shared this information in a mid-week update on the day we learned the news. The new case rate in Maine Schools is 22 people per 10,000, 35% lower than the statewide total of 34 new cases per 10,000 people.

Almost all the district staff who want the vaccine are in the state's system, with 88% of staff at the high school, for example, registered. My husband and I will be vaccinated on St. Patrick's Day. In the words of Nurse Wesson at BAHS, "This week has been an amazing ride, as vaccine availability pops up here and there."

That's it for this week. As always, please feel free to be in touch with our nurses, administrators, and me. Students and staff have been fabulous about wearing masks and maintaining social distance. Though we can see the light at the end of this pandemic tunnel, it is too soon to relax the state safety requirements, as attested to by this week's positive cases. It would be a terrible shame to come this far together and yet experience serious illness or even a death in a member of our community. Unfortunately, it is still a possibility and will continue to be until we reach herd immunity. So far, all positive cases in RSU 71 have recovered from the disease.

Warm wishes for a safe and happy weekend and week ahead. The next update will be sent on Friday, March 19, unless we have one or more positive coronavirus cases before then.

Sincerely,    Mary Alice

Important COVID-19 Update: East Belfast and THMS

Wednesday, March 10, 2021

Dear Students, Families, Staff, School Board, and Community Members,

Today we have had two confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Individuals associated with the East Belfast Elementary School and Troy Howard Middle School, one case in each school.

Students at East Belfast will be dismissed beginning at 12 noon today. Parents and guardians are encouraged to pick up their children if they are able. Students needing transportation will be driven home on buses beginning at 12:30 p.m. today. Students at East Belfast will move to the Red/Remote Mode and learn at home remotely beginning tomorrow, returning to in-person instruction on Monday, March 22. Students will be sent home with their 1:1 devices. School nurses will contact Parents and guardians if your child(ren) are close contacts. Students will also be sent home with bag lunches (tuna fish or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches).

At Troy Howard Middle School, only those students who are close contacts will be dismissed today. Students will be sent home with their 1:1 devices. School nurses will contact parents and guardians of students who are close contacts.  Parents and guardians of children affected may come to the school to get their children; students requiring transportation will be taken home on a bus. The seventh grade will move to the Red Remote Mode of remote learning and return to school on Friday, March 19.

Though we can see the light at the end of the tunnel, it continues to be imperative that we all continue to strictly follow all safety protocols, especially wearing masks and maintaining social distance.

Please feel free to be in touch with administrators, nurses, and me. We are a great team and will get through this together!

Weekly Update - 3/5/21

Weekly Update - Friday, March 5, 2021

Dear RSU 71 Students, Families, Staff, School Board, and Community Members,

I hope that you have had a fantastic first week in March. We have the most number of school days in March than in any other month (23), which is helpful to continuity in teaching and learning. I'm continuing to see evidence of excellent teaching and learning happening throughout RSU 71 and will give voice to just one example of innovative education at the end of this letter, which will be Robo-emailed to families in the afternoon and posted on the district website and my blog.

Green and Yellow - We have had one confirmed case of the coronavirus in an individual associated with Belfast Area High School. All individuals who are close contacts have been notified. According to risk,  Waldo County continues to be assessed as green in the state's color-classification system; indeed, the entire state is now green. I've been asked if the high school will become green (full-time in-person instruction) this spring. We still need to follow the six safety requirements, one of which is a social distance requirement of 3-feet between students when masked, 6-feet between students when not masked (to eat lunch, for example), and 6-feet between adults and all other people, even when masked. The high school classrooms and hallways are not large enough to implement this safety requirement if everyone comes to school simultaneously. So we won't return to full-time in-person instruction in 9- 12 until everyone wishes to receive the COVID-19 vaccine pandemic has been able to get one, and we reach herd immunity. Although all our K-8 schools are currently in green in-person mode, certain grade levels may need to move to yellow, as many students have returned to in-person instruction. In certain classes and grades, we are at the upper limit of what we can safely fit into a classroom; if we get even one more student in some grades, we will need to move to yellow/hybrid at that grade level (not for the whole school).

Vaccinations - Many staff members are eager to be immunized against the coronavirus. Maine has found a way to enable all staff to be vaccinated soon, which is another good news piece. Several folks have asked if the COVID-19 vaccine is required. It is not mandated for students or staff. Click on this blue link to see more information from Governor Mills, who released a statement about it.

Non-COVID 19 Vaccinations - While we are on the topic of vaccinations, the new law that requires all students to be immunized against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, measles, mumps, rubella, polio, and varicella will go into effect on September 1.  Students enrolled in grades 7 - 12 must also be immunized against meningococcal. So schools will send parents and guardians of students who are missing vaccinations a letter explaining which ones their children will need to get by September 1. Here in the blue link is an explanation of which age groups need which vaccine:

LD 798 Implementation, Effective September 1, 2021

Rental Assistance - Due to the pandemic's impact on family finances, eligible families may qualify for up to one year of rental support. Click the link below for more information.

https://www.mainehousing.org/programs-services/rental/rentaldetail/covid-19-rental-relief-program

Food Assistance - Many families are struggling with putting food on the table during the pandemic. Many thanks to Bell the Cat and Riposta Funeral Home for their $1,700 donation to the RSU 71 Food Pantry. It would be terrific for families to share thanks with these two excellent community partners. Some of the funds ($1,200) result from their proceeds from the Our Town Belfast Ice Sculpture Event last weekend. An additional $300 was donated by community members this week.   Many thanks to all who have contributed -- we really appreciate it!

Request for Honesty about Travel - Families are asked to contact school nurses when planning a trip outside Maine. Thanks in advance for being forthcoming. Nurses are happy to work with families to make it work. Travel requirements may be found here.

Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) - Our Food Services Program has received an additional $12,250 for FFVP for the following schools: Nickerson, Weymouth, East Belfast, and Troy Howard. Ames and CASS also receive FFVP funding. The funds are used to provide fresh fruit and vegetables to children outside of their school meals, usually at snack time. Our Food Service Team has done an excellent job applying for funding and giving students opportunities to try unfamiliar produce; students love this program! It also helps all families because these snacks are free. Another component of FFVP is the provision of educational materials to help students learn about nutrition.

Remote Learning at Troy Howard Middle School - Despite a thirteen-hour time difference, remote 8th graders correspond with students in Bali, Indonesia, via Zoom, thanks to THMS teacher Guy Hamlin. The introductory session was on February 10, and the second meeting was on February 24.  There will be two more sessions in March. Students and teachers have talked about the origins of our names.  In Bali, children are named using their birth order as a part of their official name. They've also discussed how routines have changed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Indonesian students shared information about school uniforms and their Hindu faith (Indonesia, overall, is the largest Muslim country globally, whereas Bali is about 87% Hindu). The next session will focus on food and holidays. There has been lots of activity in the chat boxes during sessions, too. And many of the students have shared Instagram information and stayed in touch outside of the sessions.  Students on both sides of the exchange have had positive things to say about what they learned. Kudos to Mr. Hamlin for making this intercultural learning possible!

Congratulations and Good Luck, BAHS Lions! Congratulations to the Cheer Team on completing their KVAC routine Wednesday night. The final result can be watched on our YouTube Channel RSU71 TV. We are awaiting the final scores, which are being tallied virtually.

The Boys Varsity Basketball Team takes on Oceanside tonight. You can watch the game on RSU3's Vimeo channel.

Our Boys JV Basketball Team finished their season last night against Temple. All our home games can be watched on RSU71 TV.

This update will be emailed to the staff, school board, and press at 11:30 am, Robo-emailed to all families at 2:30 pm, and then posted on our district website and my blog.

With best regards for our entire community and warm wishes for a safe and happy weekend,
